Calderwood Goat Dairy
Calderwood Goat Dairy started in the fall of 2015 with 60 does. In 2016, Doug Calderwood moved his operation to Royalton, Vermont to a new farm with 15 tillable acres and a 1980’s tie stall barn that was expanded to hold a new milk house, milking parlor, and housing for the milking does. Doug also rents an additional 75 acres of land to grow hay. In his first year on the new farm, Doug built a 28’x92’ greenhouse barn for young stock. He came to the Vermont Farm Fund for a Business Builder Loan to build a 40’x104’ coverall barn to be able to expand up to 200 milking head.
Calderwood Goat Dairy milks Alpine and Saanen goats, two of the top milking breeds. The dairy produces fluid milk which is sold to Vermont Creamery. Goat milk has a more stable demand than cow’s milk, with pay based on quality of the milk.
Doug graduated from Vermont Technical College in 2013 with a degree in diversified agriculture and went on to manage a large sheep and goat dairy in New York State. Calderwood Goat Dairy has received a Working Lands Grant to help start the farm as well as a FarmStart loan from Yankee Farm Credit.
